If you’re aiming for professional sewing results, understanding and adjusting the upper thread tension on your BERNINA is essential. This feature, conveniently located on the Status Bar, allows for seamless modification to suit your specific needs.

Automatic Adjustments for Optimal Performance

By default, when you select a stitch pattern on a BERNINA, the machine automatically sets the upper thread tension. This default setting is perfectly balanced using with Mettler thread size 100/2, used both as the upper and bobbin thread. However, if you're working with different types of threads, you might need to tweak these settings for optimal results.

Customizing Upper Thread Tension

To adjust the tension, simply tap the Upper Thread Tension icon on the Status Bar. A dialog window will open, displaying the current tension setting. If you decide to make changes, the display will turn yellow, indicating an alteration from the default setting.

There are several ways to adjust the upper thread tension:

• Tap the +/- icon
• Use the slider
• Turn one of the Multi-function knobs on the exterior of the machine

Understanding Tension Changes

A higher decimal value means the upper thread is tighter, pulling the bobbin thread up into the fabric. On the other hand, a lower value indicates a looser tension, allowing the bobbin thread to remain less prominent. As you modify these settings, watch the icon on the Status Bar. It will reflect your changes, updating both the number and the image to show whether tension is being increased or decreased.

Returning to Default and Other Tips

If you wish to return to the default setting, simply tap the yellow value box, and it will revert to blue, indicating the default setting is restored. It's important to note that these adjustments apply only to the selected stitch pattern and will reset once the machine is turned off.
